Textual Analysis of Entertainment Weekly.

Front cover of Entertainment Weekly Magazine

This magazine is a American magazine and issues on a weekly basis and costs £2.88. Entertainment Magazine was published by an institution named AOL Time Warner. This media company also specialises in film, television and radio. On the other hand, I will be discussing the music perspective of this magazine. Its competitiors are, Us Weekly,Premiere. Time Warner faces industry competition from traditional media companies such as Vivendi,CBS Corporation, Sony, Viacom, The Walt Disney Company, NBC Universal and lastly News Corporation. This magazine circulates around 1.7 million copies per week.

The targetted audience for this magazine ranges from young teengaer and to middle aged adults. As you can see the magazine has embedded and image of a singer called Alicia Keys who has a very young and fresh appearance therefore not many adults may know her. However, the cover does look appealing to all ages so any adult may want to find out who she is or what this genre talks about. The strapline talks has mentioned that death of a very famous person who was also involved in the media industry ; Norman Mailer was an American playwright, screen writer and film director he unfortunately died from acute renal failure and was a deeply loved person. He adored his loved ones soo much that he worked with his children when writing a novel.

The front cover uses a range of light browns and dark shaded colours to contrast against the image of Alicia Keys. Alicia Keys is a well known singer and favoured very much with the young teenagers. This implies that the magazine is aimed at the young teenagers. She has a grin on her face, therefore this will encourage the audience to purchase the item. The subheading, with its empowering words automatically indicates to the reader that the musician would like to share her background and how she became who she is today. Therefore the older generation may like to read this and know more about her. The coverline is also in capital letters however the heading 'Alicia Keys' is in a bigger font size to guide your attention to these words first. The colour white, has been effectively used and sets a contrast against the background. In addition to this, the coverline has been purposefully placed at eye level so that the targetted audience will have no difficulty in reading. A medium close up of Alicia Keys, has been used for us to see her facial expressions clearly. She is also, looking straight into the camera in a friendly manner which suggets to us readers, that she is a friendly person.

The coverlines 'Oscar' and 'Gossip Girl' are in the colour pink. The phrase' Gossip Girl' sounds very colloquial and feminine while 'Oscars' exerts a grand and royal impression on the reader. Moreover, 'Gossip Girl' is a term that teengers of a young age would normally involve themselves in and would like to know more about. The caption under the coverline 'Oscars' says '10 ways to pick the winners' .Therefore the magazine gives you the opportunity to choose, who you think should win an oscar.  Moreover, this shows that the magazines aims to entertain rather than focus wholly on music. The instituition, wants you to keep on purchasing the magazine therefore the magazine constantly attempts to involve you the reader. The fact that both coverlines, are in pink and have a bigger font size suggests to us the readers, that the magazine specializes in other parts of the media. Therefore the magazine strives to increase the publics awareness of other parts of the media industry.

Another subheading includes a famous television actress named Jennifer Aniston who has stared in  films, commercials and music videos and is currently a supporter of the organization Friends of El Faro. Therefore the magazine is fond of letting you know just how much, celebrities contribute to society. To substantiate my point the caption beneath it says ' The 50 Greatest Stars of all Time' which lets you know that this celebrities has been included in the list.
