Second Double Page Spread Analysis.

Source- Google Images.
In this second content analysis, the text is wrapped around the image and as a result we see a 60:50 picture ratio to make the magazine more appealing. A medium close up, has been taken of the singer Rihanna. She is also looking directly at the camera to make us the audience feel apart. An Edwardian Script TLC has been used in the text overlapping the image of Rihanna, making the article have femminine touch to it. The diifferent hairstyles shown at the top of the left page, signifies to us that this celebrity has her own style. This, too is very appealing. In this text we see a connection, between the magazine and  the words used. 'Fire red' has been mentioned to make the article seem fiesty but feminine at the same time, aswell as this we instanly notice that the magazines background is red also.. The mode of address is quite chatty and informal, yet this may be, because of young the singer is. The word 'Exclusive' indicates to the reader that you will not be able to find this interview in any of the other magazines. Therefore you are moe inclined to purchase the magazine.

However, the source, in which I got this music magazine is google images. However, this magazine does seem to be made by a student as the text contains spelling errors and the title 'Exclusive Rihanna interview' does not sound very exciting to read. Therefore this magazine is not an ideal magazine.

Textual Analysis of a Double Page Spread.

 Source- Google Images.
First of all, the colours used in this double page spread are very refreshing and solemnly bright. The effective use of these colours, comfort the audience and make them feel light hearted. There are two main columns. They are laid out in a standard form which makes the magazine look formal and easy for the audience to read. The picture text ratio is 60:40. From looking at the double page spread, the image of the well known musician T.I. takes up a whole page. The picture of T.I  almost looks as if the image bleeds out of its frame to make the magazine look real and packed. However, the text is in a small font-size. In addition to this, the title at the top of the page, is in bold writing which takes up half of the page. Informal language is also used; 'T.I.hollers'. The text at the top of the page saying 'Summer Preview' is in  sans serifed font and gives off an vibrant and young aura to the magazine. The title 'Summer Time' is also in the same font and has two dots inbetween the letters 'T' and 'I' promoting the singers name - T.I. This indicates to the reader that the magazine wants you to read the article.

To conclude, this magazine does look professionally done, as a pun has been used on the title "SUMMER T.I.ME" reinforcing who the person in the image is. The page has also been decorated with circles, around the text. To make the article look effective, aswell as appealing to the audience.

Exploring the Media

Page 118 talks about what the inside of a magazine should basically contain.

  •  The content page should instantly let the audience become aware of the brand identity.
  • The magazine must have an editors letter as this adds to the realism of the magazine.
  • The double page spread should look atttractive and appealing. The pages should have atleast have two or three coloumns.
  • The magazine sector are controlled by major firms such as IPC, Bauer, Conde Nast, EMAP, The National Magazine Company and BBC Magazines.

Page 119 states that competition always happens between the publishers and therefore the industry has not been growing very much as before.

Textual Analysis of Q magazine.

Q magazine is published by an institution called Bauer Media. The magazine is published monthly and costs £3.50. In addition to this, Q has a radio station which was launched in June 2008, alongside this Q also holds their very own awards show. Therefore this firm are extremely involved in all types of media and find this as a key element in interesting the readers. The total circulation for Q magazine is 80418.

The magazine looks very attractive and appealing to the targetted audience which is presumably for mature music lovers, instead of young teenagers because of the colours used. The background consisting of a black colour; is an indicator as to who the target audience might be.The magazine looks very compact and has an ideal appearance of a magazine just like the two other magazines. The magazine mentions that there is an interview with Madonna meaning that the maagzine has had the opportunity to sit down and actually talk to her. Something that not many magazines get the chance to do.

The magazine has also issued a free music collection CD to persuade you to buy the magazine. In addition to this the word 'Free' is in black, bold capital letters to attract your attention and persude you more and buy the magazine. An image has been placed, beside the text  to let you see what the CD looks like.  To add to this, a barcode has been used to give some authority to the cover jsut like the other two covers.

The subheading beneath the heading 'Madonna' , taboo language has been used to shock the reader and alert the readers to the drastic change, in how a magazine portrays the company. The size of font used is not very big, which could mean that this is not a majorly depicted in the magazine.

Madonna looks very sinister, mischievous and slightly serious suggesting that the magazine may not be as vibrant, bright and colourful as the two other magazine. A medium shot, has been taken of  Madonna. If we, the readers look at Madonna from any direction you will notice that she seems to look straight at us. Therefore,  this can also add to our decison to buy the magazine. Her name 'Madona' has been centered on the page and is in a big font size to make us see this first and influence us the readers to look inside and then purchase the magazine.

Monday, 12 December 2011

As you can I see, I have done a double page spread for the first time. I enjoyed doing this task very much, even though I thought it would be hard as we had to do this in a different software; Indesign.

Textual Analysis of Entertainment Weekly.

Front cover of Entertainment Weekly Magazine

This magazine is a American magazine and issues on a weekly basis and costs £2.88. Entertainment Magazine was published by an institution named AOL Time Warner. This media company also specialises in film, television and radio. On the other hand, I will be discussing the music perspective of this magazine. Its competitiors are, Us Weekly,Premiere. Time Warner faces industry competition from traditional media companies such as Vivendi,CBS Corporation, Sony, Viacom, The Walt Disney Company, NBC Universal and lastly News Corporation. This magazine circulates around 1.7 million copies per week.

The targetted audience for this magazine ranges from young teengaer and to middle aged adults. As you can see the magazine has embedded and image of a singer called Alicia Keys who has a very young and fresh appearance therefore not many adults may know her. However, the cover does look appealing to all ages so any adult may want to find out who she is or what this genre talks about. The strapline talks has mentioned that death of a very famous person who was also involved in the media industry ; Norman Mailer was an American playwright, screen writer and film director he unfortunately died from acute renal failure and was a deeply loved person. He adored his loved ones soo much that he worked with his children when writing a novel.

The front cover uses a range of light browns and dark shaded colours to contrast against the image of Alicia Keys. Alicia Keys is a well known singer and favoured very much with the young teenagers. This implies that the magazine is aimed at the young teenagers. She has a grin on her face, therefore this will encourage the audience to purchase the item. The subheading, with its empowering words automatically indicates to the reader that the musician would like to share her background and how she became who she is today. Therefore the older generation may like to read this and know more about her. The coverline is also in capital letters however the heading 'Alicia Keys' is in a bigger font size to guide your attention to these words first. The colour white, has been effectively used and sets a contrast against the background. In addition to this, the coverline has been purposefully placed at eye level so that the targetted audience will have no difficulty in reading. A medium close up of Alicia Keys, has been used for us to see her facial expressions clearly. She is also, looking straight into the camera in a friendly manner which suggets to us readers, that she is a friendly person.

The coverlines 'Oscar' and 'Gossip Girl' are in the colour pink. The phrase' Gossip Girl' sounds very colloquial and feminine while 'Oscars' exerts a grand and royal impression on the reader. Moreover, 'Gossip Girl' is a term that teengers of a young age would normally involve themselves in and would like to know more about. The caption under the coverline 'Oscars' says '10 ways to pick the winners' .Therefore the magazine gives you the opportunity to choose, who you think should win an oscar.  Moreover, this shows that the magazines aims to entertain rather than focus wholly on music. The instituition, wants you to keep on purchasing the magazine therefore the magazine constantly attempts to involve you the reader. The fact that both coverlines, are in pink and have a bigger font size suggests to us the readers, that the magazine specializes in other parts of the media. Therefore the magazine strives to increase the publics awareness of other parts of the media industry.

Another subheading includes a famous television actress named Jennifer Aniston who has stared in  films, commercials and music videos and is currently a supporter of the organization Friends of El Faro. Therefore the magazine is fond of letting you know just how much, celebrities contribute to society. To substantiate my point the caption beneath it says ' The 50 Greatest Stars of all Time' which lets you know that this celebrities has been included in the list.

Textual Analysis of Classic fM Music Magazine.

Front cover of Classical FM.

This edition of Classic FM magazine is published by Haymarket Media Group. In doing ,my reseach about the magazine, I found out that the magazine circulates 30,225 days, the magzine is published monthly and was launched in 1995. This company also publishes international magazines such as Direct Makerting News (USA) and Bahrain International Circuit. However the Classical FM station is owned by Global Radio. This type of magazine would normally suit the older adults ( 35+) , however some teenagers may like to read some pages as the front cover may instantly attract them to it just like the magazine here. Teenagers may want to feel inspired by something that they would not normally read.

The strapline mentions that it has a free CD, which persuades the audience to buy. It also says that the magazine is one of the favourite classical music magagzines, therefore the magazine has been the publics favourite for a while.

Classical FM not only specializes in soothing music, but also has its very own radio station  that operates from and sponsors theatre dramas and interviews of  dancers, musicians aswell as advertising tickets for concerts. The price of the magazine is £4.25. The front cover of this magazine achieves its purpose of giving a vibrant feel because of the colour , it is fresh because of the minimal make up used on Myleen Klass. Myleen Klass is also a well known  classical musician aswell as a TV presenter. The colours used , give the impression that the magazine intends, to gain the publics interests but at the same time, be targeted towards the older generation mainly. The coverline, is very standard and simple. This suggests that the target audience is the oldr generation. The older genreation, will only be able to understand simple text , so this is an obvious indicator. The style of font is also quite standardized and formal while the 'f'  is in a swirly style font. The letter 'F' in red, could represent the word 'Females' and therefore give the readers, the impression that the magazine acts as a semi- role model to them. The colour red, is also a feminine colour which could suggests, that this edition of the magazine pays most attention to women, which is unusual for a magazine specialising in all the different kinds of media. The cover line with its determinating and strong souled aura, 'My Musical Mission' suggests that the target audience is for people who believe they can achieve and be able to do what they set their minds on. She is alos tryin to tell us what she has done and the coverline explanes this a bit more. Based on the context of the cover line , the targetted audience could possibly vary from late teens upto 35+. The word 'Musical' is in a bigger font, than the rest of the text and in red font colour, against the white background, therefore this means that the magazine is aimed at music. This coverline is also at eye level to catch your attention first and persuade you to purchase the magazine. The word 'Mission' is the slightly smaller than the 'Musical'  but still stands out especially since it has as exclamation mark right next to it. It is as if Myleene Klass is speaking aloud to us the readers, while we read her words. If the audience carefully look at the sub heading 'How the presenter is winning new freinds for classical music' this gives readers a sense of  happiness and laughter.

The model (Myleen Klass) is also a guest and musician. She is within the same range as the targetted audience which means that she is a a person to aspire to be like. She is looking straight at the camera and audience in a confident manner, with her chin slighty dipped onto her shoulder and smilles to us the audience in a freindly way. This implies that the targetted audience can relate to her as a freind. A medium close up of her has been shown. She is wearing a pink top which provides a good contarst  background. Based of the fact that she has no make up, suggests that she is a represenation of the ideal targetted audience.

Other subheadings ,include two famous composers to interest the readers mind. On the left hand side of the page is the cover line 'Fiddler on the surf',  this is a play on words as the original title is 'Fiddler on the roof'. Therefore this adds humour to the magazine and makes the public want to buy it. Beneath this, 'BEST LIVE MUSIC GUIDE!' has been written .This is in capital letters to inform the reader that the magazines offers the best help with where to go to listen to live music. The writing is in white and set against a red background therefore the colour red could also mean that it is part of their brand identity.

My Magazine Content Page.

This is my finished content page. I am very pleased with my content page. It has taken a long time to accomplished and I can finally say that I have finished. Let me know if you agree. Thank you very much.

What do you think. Please let me know? It is almost ready.

Evaluation for my media product.

  •  In what ways does your produt use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
The conventions of my student magazine cover includes, having a banner with headlines surrounding an image in the middle. I have also included an advertisement section at the bottom of my cover page to get the targeted audiences attention. The front cover has to include a title to make it easy to be identified. The front cover, has to include the price and issue date aswell. In addition to this, the editor or the name of the person who took the photo should be mentioned. The content pages are not meant to be in order, instead it is to  give an effect for a specific  purpose. For instance, a typical contents page should standout and include eye-catching stories. The pages may start like so : Page 4 - The boy with his final "results". Page 7- Want to know your horoscopes? Page 13- Did you know the advantages of doing any kind of sport? instead of,  Page 1...., Page 2 ...... then Page 3 ...........

The stories discussed, in the magazine should attract us immediately and I believe it does, in my magazine. I have included all these conventions in my magazine. I have put my editorial on the left-side of my content page as at eye- level . This unusual, because most magazine's I have read, are at the right hand corner of the page.

  • How does your media product represent particular social groups?
I have represented teenagers, who are school students in my magazine. I have also made reference to the teenagers by introducing the idea of the students prom which takes place at the end of a school year. I have discussed why going to university is the best option. Finally I have talked about St Edmunds Day, this is where all students go off the school premises and do a day of activities. I am not convinced that stereotype students may want to read my magazi ne because of how unusual the title is. The magazine discusses mostly academinc things such as GCSE results and awards. However there is a slight possibility that sterotypes who admire fashion , might be willing to read my magazine because it does discuss certain aspects of the fashion industry.
  • What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
I think a school , college or even the universities that are fond, of making reference to other magazines which aim to educate, might distribute my media product. The reasons why a company, would want to distribute my magazine, may be because it explores different perspectives of the academic life installed in a child. My magazine, talks about what universities have to offer, why doing sports is investing in the well being of your own body and how that affects your concerntration skills in class. The magazine, lastly discusses what students have achieved and are capable of doing in the longterm. The magazine is very unique, in the sense that, it does not just talk about the students but also involves students parents. Inside my magazine, I have advertised a christmas fayre activity, that gives parents the opportunity to join in. Personally, I think this is an important feature for magazines of any genre to be able to do. Once this is stated in a  magazine, I strongly believe that it will help maximise the brand identity of a magazine. In my, magazine I have maximised the brand identity, to make readers fully aware of what the magazine represents in general.

  • Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for my magazine would be from 13 to17 years of age. The gender, would be mainly females because I have mainly used feminine colours in my magazine.  However, I have written about the recent sports in the news, so a small minority, are welcome to read my magazine. The main audience; females would have to be people that are forward-looking. The targetted audience, should have some interest in their education and the many possible advantages it brings along with it. For example, If I read a book on how to make a music magazine, I will then be able to experience what is like to take camera shots of artists performing and then I will be able to know how to make an actual music magazine. Therefore, in the longrun, when I start thinking of how to get a job, the skills that I used to make a music magazine, will enable me make this into a profession. The targetted audience should atleast, have some interest in doing any kind of exercise whether it be from anything such as walking, upto rowing a boat.

  • How did you attract/address your audience?

In my opinion, the title "Studious" is first of all absolutely unusual and secondly a very empowering word, to describe a student. Therefore I thought that the word would  and should reflect that same identity in my magazine.  In addition to this, I find it sounds very similar to the word "Student". Therefore I have not dispersed from the main topic, which was to make the magazine, seem like a college/student magazine. I also included a section that talks about proms for 16 and 17 year olds. I have talked about what students have acheived academically, which should engage the 13 years olds minds aswell. I have also included a real- life story that should involve all groups of age. For the whole magazine cover, I have used bright feminine colours that will catch the audiences attention immediately. My magazine speaks to the main audience in first person, as if I was talking to them in person. It speaks to them in a very conversational manner.

  • What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

In order to complete my media product, I used photoshop, publisher, a scanner, a digital camera and blogger. I have learnt, that it is crucial to know the functions of the different technologies in order to complete your product. I have also learnt that it is not always straight forward to do, as you can sometimes get confused between the names for the tools. One thing I have definately learnt, is that, it is also fast and efficient in enabling you get a piece of information across to the audience.

My Finished Media Magazine Cover.

This is my finished magazine cover, however  I must confess that it was not an easy or straight forward task to do, but I have finally completed my preliminary task ,which took a great deal of hours to finish.
It has been a very successful  peice of coursework in general .
I now, know what I need to improve upon in the next coursework- which will be a  music magazine.
I am looking forward to doing this in due course.

Media magazine Cover- The challenges.

When doing my cover and making it look the way it does , I had difficulty in correcting  my spelling. I battled, with using the clone stamp on photoshop, corectly as I could not get the right type of shade colour; which was the colour grey. Therefore, it took me a while to cover the orginal writing and eventually write over it. Now, I have successfully accompolished this task and very pleased to say that the clone stamp was a very benefical  and efficient tool for me.

My Media Magzine Cover.

So , I am still in the process of making my cover look right and ready. It is looking very good in my opinion by the way what do you think.

I Would be glad to get some feedback from you!

First Attempt Trying How To Do A Magazine Cover.

To have been able to do this, I copied an image online. To make it look like an actual cover for a magazine I then had to alter it and cut the background which I didn't really need. I  had to copy my selected piece onto a new page and I got there end. Finally ,I the wanted to see how well, one of my designed titles would fit in with the image. As you can see, it does not look too bad, since this is one of my titles I can try out my other designs.

Photoshop Task - Creating the cover of a cookbook.

I achievied this by going on to a photoshop site. It was a great task for me to do and I really enjoyed doing this, even though this task is not get done ain a short space of  time.First of all, I  had to copy the  picture of a crab on to another new page and then select certain areas and re-size it via the marquee selection tool. I then got a chnce to use the side bar tools one to help make my work look like this. The paint brush,  helped me  paint small gaps that I could not fill in with the paint bucket, so I found this very useful and beneficial.  I then had to add the lemons using marquee selection tools again and this waas very hadr for me to do as I had to try select the whole of the lemon with the one chance I had. If this doid not happen then I would have to do it again, but I am glad to say that I did acheive this successfully.
My next task was to make a spine for this 'cookbook' and textualise it as you can see, I ended up using the colour green with a masaic texture. For my background, I ended up using the colour blue.Overall, I think that the outcome has been very advantageous and will certainly help me complete my second piece of coursework which is approachng very soon.

Content Analysis of Three Magazines

Student iD issue No.13

  1. The first double page spread we see that the content page is a series of pictures across both pages. All the people in the photographs are smiling, which is a positive impression to readers. Colloquial language is used alongside an interview of a teacher, to inform the reader that the main target audince is for young teenagers.
  2.  Colourful backgrounds are on each page, to attract the reader and make them pay attention to the information provided.
  3. A double page spread of a 'creative writing' story to inspire young children to read and write in the near future.
  4. The layout of the text is not in a standard form, words have been slanted or have been put in a bigger font than other text on the page.Different style fonts are used according to the topic.
Common Sense:
  1. Unlike the 'Student ip' magazine, a plain background for most pages in the magazine has been used.
  2. Health issues are mainly issued in this magazine like anorexia, your weight and drinking alchol signifying to us the readers; that the main target audience in not for young tennagers but older tennagers which is different from the 'Student iD' magazine.
  3. This magazine also talks about teenagers reading books, however the only difference is that, this magazine talks about World Book Day whereas the other magazine provides you with a variety of books to read for pleasure and in your own spare time.
  4. In comparison to both magazines 'Student iD' and 'Common Sense'. At the back of the magazines, there is a page explaining what university is about and involves. This suggests that the target audience is mainly for old tennagers whereas the other magazine is aimed at young teenagers.
Student iD Spring edition:

  1. Text is mainly in coloumn form, to make the magazine look neat and formal unlike 'student iD' and 'Common Sense'. This makes the reader have a  positvie impression of the magazine therefore older  teenagers are likely to buy the magazine.
  2. In in the middle page of the magazine, there is a 2 doublepage spread of girls and boys being unexpectedly photographed, which is not shown in the above migazines.
  3. A photograph of the prime minister - Gordon Brown has been placed at eyelevel, to make you see this first and read the article. The title is in red signifying to the reader that the article is very important. The magazine in general takes into consideration childrens education from a political perspective and not an academic view.
  4. Coming up events are talked about such as films and sports events. To engage you the readers to have an active mind .

Textual Analysis of Magazine's Content.

Common Sense by Luton Sixth Form and editors Katie Firmin and Katie Hollingsworth- The headline is very bold and in a big typeface to catch the reader attention. The layout of the page mainly shows a series of picture opposite the actual content page to introduce the readers to the magazine. An ellipsis has been used to indicate to the reader that there is more inside therefore a lot of information is in the magazine. A rhetorical question has been included to create a sense of humour to the magazine and make the reader want to know more. The content page is not categorical but numerical in order therefore it is easy for the reader to follow, this forms part of the brand identity. To the side of the page a column has been made only for images, explaining what each of the pages discuss, therefore if a teenager does not prefer reading  a piece of text, then alongside the text will be an image  which the reader can look at. The magazine is flexible in teenager preference, which is an advantage for the readers as well as producers. Exclusives are listed to excite the reader in the editorial and highlighted in the colour blue to make you see these words or phrases first. The mode of address is very colloquial and then used in the editorial to inform the reader that the magazine’s main purpose is to entertain teenagers.  A caption has been situated underneath a smaller image of the magazine, to guide our attention to the person that created the design and photograph.

Textual Analysis of Magazine Cover.

Common Sense-The cover page includes a masthead, reading out the word ‘Common Sense’.  This gives a positive impression to readers, because it’s an unusual name for a magazine. The magazine gives out a different vibe to readers, bright and vibrant colours have also been used to make the magazine appealing to the target audience.
